Ann’s Approach

Ann’s intent in using the Feldenkrais Method®, in combination with a health and wellness approach to Physical Therapy, is to assist clients in living more fully, comfortably, and effectively through developing their natural abilities to move. She uses her in depth knowledge of movement principles, sensory learning, and human development to bring about life changing improvements, expanding her client’s enjoyment of life as the body improves. Ann’s approach involves bringing balance to the body through learning how to support oneself in a dynamic fashion, allowing the breath and muscles freedom to move easily.

The Feldenkrais Method has a broad range of applications including:

  • Reducing tension and pain related to everyday activities.
  • Facilitating return to normal function after injury or trauma.
  • Improving skills of performing artists, including recovery from and prevention of injury.
  • Improving athletic performance and body awareness related to sport.
  • Achieving optimal function of children with special needs.
  • Addressing changes related to aging and continued enjoyment of activity as one grows older.

Individual work
is specifically tailored to each person’s circumstances, resulting in maximum progress. Specific problems and needs are addressed in a more detailed manner through the use of touch. Ann skillfully uses her hands to move and guide students, providing gentle and clear sensory input that the brain recognizes and uses. New possibilities of movement are brought to the individual’s attention. Habits are clarified. Students develop the ability to let go of old habits, and are able to integrate the new possibilities of movement into their lives.

is beneficial as a process on it’s own for those not needing individual help. It can also be used to supplement individual work. Here Ann verbally guides students through movement lessons using fundamental movement and biodynamic principles, improving students’ abilities to use their bodies. Ease and enjoyment of movement are emphasized, along with avoiding pain, strain, or discomfort. Learning occurs through a process of self discovery and exploration. Students are encouraged to ask questions to facilitate their learning.

A home exercise program including movement and strengthening exercises, along with functionally based educational and preventative strategies will be developed during individual sessions based on the specific needs of the individual.
